ABOUT OUR CLASSES

Pennywell Honto Shin was founded in 1983 by Sensei Liz Fraser and teaches karate in Sunderland, Tyne and Wear. The club quickly grew into a massively successful one, churning out multiple competition champions from the talented student base.  Moving on throughout the years, nothing has changed in terms of quality, with many students still entering and dominating competitions.

Sensei Fraser, over the years, has tutored more than 60 students to reach the coveted black belt with some going even further to 2nd, 3rd dan, etc. In 2012 Sensei Fraser was voted the pride of Wearside by the people of Sunderland who voted in their droves for the tireless contribution that she has provided to karate in Sunderland and her community for almost 35 years.  Sensei Fraser is an inspiration to all who have trained with her and even at the age of 77 (2020) she continues to play a very active role in her club that she founded all those years ago.

We welcome anyone to take up karate at our club, regardless of age or ability. Karate can be practiced by anyone.

Club instructors are fully DBS checked.

SOME OF OUR FACILITES INCLUDE

100 SQUARE METRE MATTED AREA

For the safety of students during training, we have a 100 square metre jigsaw matted training area. This helps to cushion falls etc during training and also helps to train for competition karate for both sparring and kata.

PUCHBAGS AND PADS

We also have punchbags, kick shields and focus mitts on hand to help impact,  target training and precision. Puchbags greatly improve training by being able to hit something and making harder contcat and conditioning the body to feel impact.  Focus mitts helps to train the body and mind to follow and hit a moving target, increasing the mental focus and coordination.
